I only recently discovered what it really means to “follow your heart”.
If you asked me, five years ago, what I wanted to do with my life, I would probably have told you that I wanted to live close to the ocean and explore the world. Forward to the present moment and I find myself living in the beautiful city of Cape Town! I have traveled extensively through South Africa, backpacked through Southeast Asia and have traveled to Mozambique and Botswana. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that life would take me on this wild adventure!
Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. To really follow your heart, you need to work hard! SUPER HARD!
You need to get up on the days you feel like spending in bed. You need to learn to say “NO” to the things that are not good for your soul. Sometimes you need to have late nights and early mornings. People might think that your ideas are crazy and sometimes you might feel judged, but remember that your loved ones only want what is best for you. This is why it is so important to surround yourself with people and things that inspire you!
Life is not always easy, we all know this. But YOU need to keep fighting for what you want. Before I moved to Cape Town, I lived in a big city. My life was filled with the idea that if I can make enough money, I can buy “things” that will make me happy. So I worked at a job I did not enjoy, slaving away and killing my soul with every single second that went past. As the time went by, I realized that if I carried on like this, I would eventually lose myself. My heart was seeking for a deeper meaning. A deeper purpose.
So, I took a little holiday to Cape Town to visit my family. Somehow, every time I came here I felt refreshed. It was almost as if the ocean air calmed my soul. This place always felt like home to me. I sat on the beach with some of my friends one day and told them how lucky they are to live here. “You can also have this you know?” my friend said. “You just find a way to make it work, and then you go for it!”.
Two years later my bags were packed and I was on my way to Cape Town. It wasn’t something that happened overnight, but I always held onto my dream. I worked at it daily. There were days where I felt like giving up, but my friends and family supported me along the way. Following my heart was the best decision I could make for myself.
Since I moved here, I had the chance to explore more of the world. I have seen the sunrise over Angkor Wat and snorkeled in Vietnam. I have fallen in love with my best friend, who also became my travel partner and my favorite adventure! I made new friends, new memories and new dreams.
“You know that crazy heart of yours? The one with lightning crackling and moonlight shining through it. The one you’ve been told not to trust because it often led you off the beaten path. The one so many have misunderstood your entire life. Trust it. Feed it. Grow it. It’s your greatest treasure and will point the way to your highest destiny. It is the voice of your soul.”
